You must have seen this video in which a woman wields her caste identity both as a threat and as a claim of superiority over others. This phenomenon of weaponization of caste by the so-called upper castes to end an argument or overpower someone is what we at the Centre for Annihilation of Caste call Casteist Closure. This is what caste does to you. It gets so deeply embedded in your psyche that your entire identity becomes your caste. You don’t hesitate to use it as your weapon of last resort. We have consistently observed this behavioral pattern in our research on caste-based atrocities. The so-called upper castes may sit with you, eat with you, and even be your friends. But, God forbid, if you end up in an argument or a verbal spat with them — it always ends with caste. They will always close the argument by reminding you of your caste. Always.

The Supreme Court of India has stayed the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026.

If you go through the arguments put forth by the advocates and the court’s observations you will realize that there will be very serious consequences for the Scheduled Castes community.

The Centre for Annihilation of Caste foresees some of the effects of this case on the Scheduled Castes community.

Effect 1: The Scheduled Castes are now being accused of dividing the society. Now raising your voice against caste-based discrimination perpetrated against the Scheduled Castes community is being equated with dividing the society. अब हम समाज को तोड़ने वाले बन गए हैं, और जिन्होंने जाति व्यवस्था बनाई, वो समाज को जोड़ने वाले बन गए हैं!

Effect 2: The Scheduled Castes are now being framed as the perpetrators of caste-based discrimination against the so-called upper castes. The so-called upper castes have now established themselves as victims of caste-based discrimination. अब हम जातिवादी हो गए हैं, और वो जातिवाद के खिलाफ लड़ने वाले!

Effect 3: The Scheduled Castes are now being accused of being casteist among themselves. The Court in this case referred to the claims of caste-based discrimination within the Scheduled Castes. अब ये कहा जाएगा कि असली जातिवाद तो Scheduled Castes के बीच में होता है और उसे रोकने की ज्यादा जरूरत है!

Effect 4: The Scheduled Castes are now being branded as fakesters and misusers. The charge of fake cases or misuse of law has now been firmly placed on the Scheduled Castes community. अब ये कहा जाएगा कि हम झूठ बोलते हैं, झूठे मुकदमे करते हैं और हमें कोई जाती सूचक शब्दों से नहीं बुलाता, हमें कोई कोटा वाला नहीं बुलाता!

All of this will ultimately push us toward caste neutrality in India’s anti-discrimination jurisprudence. I believe the last bastion of protection that we have, that is the Prevention of Atrocities Act, which is already riddled with legal loopholes, will also be scrapped.

Slowly and steadily, they are turning the entire jurisprudence of caste-based discrimination in their favor all while preserving and perpetuating the caste system.
